Canada’s Income Tax Act allows new immigrants to Canada to benefit from a five year ‘tax holiday’ after they immigrate into Canada. Newcomers to Canada are normally subject to Canadian income taxes on their worldwide income upon their arrival, however, the Act allows new immigrants to create what is known as an “immigration trust.”

You can place all of your foreign investment assets into this Immigration Trust. If properly-structured, any foreign earned income and capital gains earned from the assets held in this trust will be exempt from taxation. Please keep in mind that you will need to set up this trust and transfer your assets into it before you immigrate to Canada.
