Enjoy Studying in Canada!
A TRUE STORY!In 1996 a young Indian student from Dubai arrived with his family to settle down in Vancouver, Canada. When he first arrived he had to go to the Richmond School Board for a preliminary, language and math exam that all immigrant kids must go through when seeking admission into Canadian Schools for the first time. After he scored perfect on the test, he started school at Hugh Boyd in Richmond, B.C. in grade 9, after completing grade 8 in Dubai, UAE. ( No loss in school years as is the common story sometimes). Good to remember this. Within 3 days of starting school, he was promoted to grade 10 math due to the outstanding potential he showed. (Shows you that Canadian Educators/Teachers are not only very fair but are wide awake! I doubt this would have happened in his own home country) He then completed Grade 9 with honours, and moved to Windsor High School in North Vancouver. It was a different locality and yet he found it very easy to make new friends and joined the Student Council to help organize school events. At Windsor he placed in the top 3 students of the class every year until High School Graduation and won numerous mathematics competitions, a computer competition and received a letter of commendation from the Mayor of Vancouver for helping to organize and promote a drug awareness campaign with the help of local Police officers. He won numerous scholarships before starting university: a) Sterling Pulp Chemicals Bursary $500, b) Passport to Education $800, c) Provincial Exam Scholarship $1000, d) Simon Fraser University Summit Scholarship $3500, e) The Lucent Global Scholarship Award $ 7500 (Aug 2001) He then was accepted into the Engineering Faculty at the prestigious Simon Fraser University, consistently ranked by McLean's Magazine as the best Comprehensive University in the Country. After completing his first two semesters at the top of the class, he won an international level scholarship called the "Lucent Global Science Scholarship" $7500. This Scholarship was given to only 3 Candidates who were vetted from a total population of approx 30 million Canadians and permanent residents. As part of the co-op program at Simon Fraser University, he got a summer job at a leading High Tech company in B.C. for four summer months and earned a very respectable salary of $2250 per month during his 1st year 2001. He has already been offered for his next work term at Lucent approximately $3800 per month and will begin working on the 4th of Jan 2002. The moral of the story, is that if you are planning to come to Canada for the sake of your children's education and development....................LOOK NO FURTHER!!! COME LIVE THE CANADIAN DREAM!! This student can be seen below in the center of the picture in a (grey shirt).
A small group photo taken on top of the Trade Center in New York, during the 8 day Lucent Global Science Scholars Summit in July of 2001. 104 of the top science and engineering students from around the world were flown down for an all expense paid tour of New York, New Jersey and Bell Labs headquarters.
15th Feb, 2003...... Subsequently to posting the above information in 2001, this bright young man continues to receive a full scholarship from SFU ( Simon Fraser University ) and has also been hired by Creo Products and Broadcom during each of his work terms gaining valuable experience as a potential Electronics Engineer when he graduates in 2005 with BE (Hons). For those of you who are in the technical field and are wondering about employment possibilities and remuneration in Canada please note that if a College Student with just two yrs of academic knowledge can be paid approx 3400C$ per month much more in your case.
