Surrey's City Manager Resigns from CAD $220,635 Job
Umendra Mital, the city manager of Surrey, resigned from his $220,635 job and negotiated a severance package that one Surrey councilor told Hall was Umendra Mital’s sudden departure is described in a release as a resignation based on “a mutual agreement with the mayor, which was unanimously supported by Surrey council.” Surrey’s top bureaucrat for the past seven years, Mital is expected to leave the position March 31. Mayor Dianne Watts described the severance as a “substantial package” which, on advice from city lawyers, cannot be released at this time. It is rumored to be in the range of $800,000. She said it’s “in accordance with his contract.” “... the employee shall receive payment equivalent to 18 months salary plus an additional one month salary for each additional year...,” Mital’s March 1, 1999 contract states. Under those terms, Mital would receive the maximum under his contract terms – equivalent to two years salary, or more than $550,000. Various other benefits included in the contract, including deferred retirement allowance, bring that figure to about $600,000. Watts said Mital played a crucial role in laying the
groundwork necessary for the current development transition within the
city. References |
