The New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Immigration Program

Why New Brunswick?

The Province of New Brunswick is set to undergo a massive and radical change.  While the short term price for energy is a subject of much speculation, most analysts agree that over the coming decades we will start to fall massively behind on world energy output versus demand.

New Brunswick is currently seeing massive industry investments in the energy sector, especially the city of Saint John which currently has Canada's largest deep port Liquid Natural Gas facility under construction for the re-gasification and distribution of shipped LNG.  In addition this city also has a new oil refinery under construction and is seeing large retail and business development.

With a population of only 180,000 people, the additional 60,000 jobs that are planned to be created over the next 3 years is going to create not only an acute skilled labour shortage but also a demand for all the retail and service based business needed to support those workers.

As of Spring 2008, you are well positioned to take advantage of all the coming growth to the area and improve not only your financial position but your family's quality of life.

Provincial Nominees who pass the medical and security requirements at the federal government level are likely to see their application for immigration to Canada processed expeditiously.

The New Brunswick nominee program is divided into two major streams:

Applicants need to make at least one exploratory visit to New Brunswick and meet with provincial officials. Applicants must have sufficient funds for the business. In addition, applicants must score a minimum of 50 points for the points system set by New Brunswick PNP.

The points are based on your age, education, work experience, language ability, and adaptability and greater consideration will be given to applicants with business plans that create employment for people other than the applicant's family members in New Brunswick.

  • you are required to participate in the business in an active managerial role.

The ability to speak English and/or French is critical to your success as an entrepreneur in New Brunswick. You are expected to have a basic knowledge of English and/or French and be able to understand and answer the questions during the interview with New Brunswick officials. If they are not satisfied that you have sufficient knowledge of the language to carry on a business in New Brunswick, you will be required to take intensive language training and to participate in a second interview prior to nomination.

The Skilled Worker Stream

To be considered for nomination as a skilled worker under the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program, you require a permanent, full-time job offer from an established New Brunswick company. The job must meet provincial employment standards and offer comparable industry rates of pay. In most cases, the skills offered by the potential immigrant are not readily available in New Brunswick and employers must demonstrate that they are having difficulty finding these skills in the local job market.

The New Brunswick Economy

New Brunswick's urban areas have modern, service-based economies dominated by the health care, educational, retail, finance and insurance, sectors. These sectors are reasonably equitably distributed in all three principal urban centres. In addition, heavy industry and port facilities are found in Saint John, Fredericton is dominated by government services, universities, and the military and Moncton has developed as a commercial, retail, transportation, and distribution centre with important rail and air terminal facilities.

The rural primary economy is best known for forestry, mining, mixed farming and fishing.

Forestry is important in all areas of the province, but especially in the heavily forested central regions. There are many sawmills in the smaller towns and there are also several large pulp and paper mills, located in Saint John, Miramichi, Nackawic and Edmundston.

Heavy metals including lead and zinc are mined in the north around Bathurst. One of the world's largest potash deposits is located in Sussex. A second potash mine, costing over a billion dollars, is in development in the Sussex region.

Farming is concentrated in the upper Saint John River valley (in the northwest portion of the province); where the most valuable crop is potatoes. Mixed and dairy farms are found elsewhere, but especially in the southeast, concentrated in the Kennebecasis and Petitcodiac river valleys.

The most valuable fish catches are lobster, scallops and king crab. The farming of Atlantic salmon in the Passamaquoddy Bay region is an important local industry.

Tourism is an important income generator, especially in the Passamaquoddy region (dominated by the resort town of St. Andrews), and in the southeast of the province, centred on Moncton and Shediac.

The largest employers in the province are the Irving group of companies, several large multinational forest companies, the government of New Brunswick, and the McCain group of companies.
