Consultant dupes 200 emigrant hopefuls |

Six immigration applicants have filed a case against a consultant who
took their money and vanished after they were promised their papers would be
filed for migration to Australia.
The owner of the Dubai-based consultancy firm is reportedly missing, and
other consultants said the number of clients cheated could be as high as
200.
On average, clients pay an initial amount of about US$2,000 for their papers
to be processed. Industry sources estimated that the consultant could have
made around Dh1.5 million from the hapless victims.
Asked what will happen to their files, another consultant said, "The office
is closed. The managers are not here. What do you think can be done?"
Another consultant said people should first make sure about the credentials
of a firm before paying for services. Though consultancy firms need to have
a local license to operate, the checks and balances in this particular
industry is not stringent.
The clients have now approached other consultancy firms to process their
papers from scratch.
Ottawa has further tightened the screws against unscrupulous agents and has
made it mandatory that only those who are Canadians or landed immigrants can
represent people who wish to migrate to Canada.
It recently conducted tests for consultants to
be qualified members of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC).
Farooq said 1,400 consultants took the test in Canada on February 22. He
said consultants will also have to pay a CSIC membership fees of Dh1,529.
Canada recently lowered the pass points to 67. Immigration papers filed from
Dubai can take anything between 18 months to two years to process.
