" Mark Twain My DiaryI have just opened the manila envelope my Immigration Consultant gave me...its been months now that I have been told I am going to receive my Visa for immigration ...next month, next week... a few days more and finally at last...the papers are here....with bated breath I pull out what looks like four large slightly beige coloured pieces of paper....yes its my Visa's. Wow!! I cant tell you how happy I am to see among those chosen ones... what will life be? I look into my wife's eyes and we both know deep down in our hearts things will be okay. Should I call my friends? Do I hire some to move......when should I start packing...how soon should I resign. What will my boss say? Oh, I am quite happy here, its so comfortable...why I am I doing this? A thousand thoughts race through my mind. Finally, once all the mental chatter subsides...I feel a rush of excitement and my energy returns to me and there is a crashing and pounding in my heart. I know this is what I have wanted all my life. I am immigrating to Canada! Yahoo! I am going to Canada. We say our tearful goodbyes for we know we wont be coming back to Dubai for sometime to come. It has been our home now for over 22 yrs. My kids were born there, I have seen the place transform itself before my very eyes. In the years that I lived here, I have been to funerals of a few good friends, watch many a newborn come into this world and I have picnicked on its beaches and parks, talked to strangers and friends while shopping in the Suk but now its time to move on with my life. Its Saturday afternoon. We have been onboard for over 15 hours with a stop over in London. I can see in the distant horizon a very green and inviting piece of land beckoning me. As the plane lazily swings across the sky tiny little dots begin to taken on a more familiar look. Tiny little houses and buildings taken on a more picturesque view. The vast expanse of land that I see below me fills me with joy. I tell myself I am going to inhabit one of the largest land masses in the world with the smallest possible human to land ratio in the world. Wow! No crowded sidewalks, no noisy street vendors, or flies, humans and cattle jostling for the same space on the road. Yes, this is sure going to be something to look for. I cant wait for the plane to come to a stop. I have been told to be on my best behaviour.Wait my turn. No pushing or elbowing anyone to get ahead of the line. I clutch my Landing Immigration Papers and with bated breath eagerly await my turn in the queue though part of me just wants to jump the line up and head straight out of the plane.
